Support is not the same as shared direction
Support means the relationship has goodwill. Shared direction means the system has clarity.
Many CEOs say they have a supportive board. That is good, but it is not enough. Support means the relationship has goodwill. Shared direction means the system has clarity.
A board can like the CEO, respect the work, and care about the mission while still creating confusion through unclear expectations, inconsistent communication, or blurred oversight. The problem is not always conflict. Sometimes the problem is pleasant ambiguity.
That ambiguity becomes costly when the organization faces pressure. The work is to build that frame before pressure exposes the gap.
